There’s nothing quite like the excitement of planning an international getaway. Whether you’re jetting off to explore sun-soaked streets in Lisbon or sipping wine in the Tuscan countryside, preparing for a vacation abroad takes more than just booking a flight—it’s about curating a glow-worthy experience from takeoff to touchdown.
In this guide, I’m breaking down my personal process for getting ready to travel abroad without the last-minute chaos. And because you know I love a good resource, I’m sharing my Free Travel Prep Checklist (so you don’t forget a thing) plus my fave secret weapon for unlocking a five-star travel experience. ✨
1. Secure the Basics: Passport, Visa & Flights
Before anything else, check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. This is a detail many travelers miss—and some countries won’t let you in otherwise.
Next, research whether you need a visa for your destination and allow time for processing. Also, make sure to use your government’s state department to figure out about safety and security at your international destination. You want to make sure you’re up-to-date on any danger zones and make sure you’re prepared for whatever may be happening in the place you will be vacationing.
Once you’re clear on entry requirements, go ahead and book those flights! I like to use tools like Google Flights, Hopper or Skyscanner to watch for price drops.
2. Plan Like a Pro with a Free Checklist
Packing last minute? Forgetting essentials? Not on our watch. I put together a streamlined Travel Checklist that covers everything from skincare minis to tech gear, so you can pack light and right.
✅ Flight + lodging confirmation
✅ Currency conversion + credit card
✅ Travel-sized carry-on kit
✅ Electronics (don’t sleep on this one)
✅ Clothing & skincare

3. Book Your Dream Tours in Advance
Here’s the thing: exploring a new city on your own is great, but getting the inside scoop from a local guide? That’s how you unlock the real magic.
One of my favorite travel hacks is using GoWithGuide, a platform that connects you with private guides around the world. You can skip the cookie-cutter group tours and customize your entire experience—whether that’s a hidden tapas tour in Barcelona or a private historical walk through Kyoto.
💡 Pro Tip: Booking tours ahead of time means less scrambling when you land and more time soaking up the vibes.

4. Prep Your Finances (So You’re Not That Tourist)
Call your bank to let them know you’re traveling. The last thing you want is a declined card in a foreign café. Also, look into a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card if you travel often.
I also like to travel with a small amount of local currency for tips, transit, and markets—just in case. Skip the airport for exchanging your cash if possible – use you travel credit card to leave the airport and head to an exchange kiosk or bank near your accommodations.
5. Protect Your Glow (Travel Insurance + Health)
It’s not cute to get caught without travel insurance—especially if you’re heading somewhere adventurous. Look into policies that cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.
Also, double-check vaccination requirements and pack any medications you’ll need for the duration of your trip.
6. Set Your Out-of-Office & Prep Your Home
Before you leave, schedule an OOO message, pause subscriptions, and tidy your space so you come home to calm vibes.
I also like to set up a few Pinterest posts or blog drafts in advance so The Glow Guild stays active while I’m away. 🌎✨
Final Thoughts
Preparing for a trip abroad doesn’t have to be stressful—it can actually be part of the glow-up process. With the right planning, a killer checklist, and experiences curated just for you, your travels become more than a trip—they become a vibe.
So pack your bags, download your free checklist, and don’t forget to check out GoWithGuide to level up your next vacation.
Here’s to glowing globally. 🌍💫
